WHO IS SASCA?

  1. SASCA is the abbreviation for the South African Sports Coaching Association, established on 8th June 2019 by SASCOC (South African Sports Confederation and Olympic Committee).

  2. We are an independent NPC (Non-Profit Company) registered with CIPC in 2019.

  3. We are the only multi-coded, SAQA recognised, sports coaching professional body in South Africa.

  4. We were established to function as a vehicle for advancing the agenda of sport coaching in South Africa.

  5. As a professional body for sports coaching, SASCA, constitutes to represent a recognised community of expert practitioners (coaches and coach developers) and as such devises, informs, monitors and continually update the benchmark standards of competence, both academic and practical, required in the profession for sports coaching.

WHY WAS SASCA FORMED and HOW WAS SASCA ESTABLISHED?

  1. To enhance the integrity, relevance and standing of the profession of sports coaching, which will benefit athletes, participants and society by providing high performance service to our membership of sports coaching professionals.

  2. To regulate, recognize and to ensure SASCA members are responsible and sign up to the Sports Coaching Charter to protect our athletes, sport coaches and citizens.

  3. The delegates at the SASCOC General Council Meeting on 8th June 2019 resolved that an independent professional body must be established as reflected in the National Sport and Recreation Plan (SRSA-NSRP, 2011 and SASCOC, South African Coaching Framework, 2011):

SASCA should align to the global trends and SAQA’s professional body’s prescripts.

SASCA has a responsibility to support the South African Coaching Framework (SASCOC, SACF, 2011) and therefore engage with:

  • Further and higher education and training – Underpinning qualifications at NQF Level 3 & 4, forming part of this section of the NQF,

  • Research, Educational delivery, and Validation,

  • Expertise Underpinned Effective Practice

  • Autonomy, Expert, Judgement

  • Advanced Education Practice

  • Educational Standards and Assessment

  • Distinct Underpinning Knowledge Base

  • Research Models,

  • Code of Conduct

  • Recognition of Professional Status (SASCA IS SAQA RECOGNISED)

WHAT IS SASCA’S CORE BUSINESS?

SASCA strives to create an enabling coaching performance environment through its diverse system and culture that embraces four domains of sports coaching, namely: Children, Emerging Talent, Community/Recreational and Performance sport coaching personnel. This environment guides the performances of athletes, participants and sports coaches to be the best that they inspire to be.

SASCA works in partnership with its members, Associate members and other stakeholders to compliment, enhance and ensure quality assurance sports coaching programmes that will guide the athletes and teams preparing for all levels of participation in sport.

SASCA is the home for South African Sport Coaches and Sport Coach Developers. Our membership includes 2 Categories: Member (non-designated or Designated) and Associate Member.

i) As a member in terms of the MOI (par 7), you are eligible to apply and receive a sports coaching designation and license to practice as a sports coach or sports coach developer.

ii) As an Associate member in terms of the MOI (par 7), you are eligible to receive an Associate member certificate if the entity is a:

  • Sport code (National Federation),

  • Provincial Sport Confederation (PSC),

  • Entities that are recognized by the Department of Sport, Arts and Culture (DSAC).

  • Entities that are higher education and training institutions, colleges, or schools registered with either the department of higher education and training (DHET), or the department of basic education (DBE), as well as skills development providers, that do not need to be registered with DHET or DBE, but are accredited by the Quality Council for Trades and Occupations (QCTO) to offer qualifications or part qualifications registered on the NQF, or skills programmes and continuing professional development programmes related to Sports Coaching.

SASCA awards sports coaching designations in two streams of coaching: Sports Coaches and Sport Coach Developers as indicated in the South African Sports Coaching pathway. SASCA has eight (8) SAQA registered sports coaching designations and in addition we cater for non-designated members that support the sports coaching industry as well as student members, registered for sports coaching qualifications.

SASCA provides its members with an endorsed license to practice as a sport coach or sport coach developer. Through benchmarking standards of competence, in collaboration with its various stakeholders, it endeavours to ensure effective sport coaching practice.
