Who are your role models in the sport?
Phumza Maweni – I’ve met her, in Mossel Bay – Peace Proscovia and Mwai Kumwenda. Hopefully I’ll get to meet her at the 2023 Netball World Cup in Cape Town

What is your most memorable personal sporting moment?
As coach of Eden Under-19 Team 2019, when we won the gold medal at the National Under-19 Netball Championship 2019 in the B-Division. It was an extremely proud and humbling moment.

The Springboks winning the three Rugby Cups yes, but the announcement that South Africa will host the 2023 Netball World Cup in Cape Town is by far the BEST (#PutYourHandsUp2023)

In terms of your travels, what has been your favourite city and why?

In the latest of our “Getting to Know” series of SASCA coaches, we catch up with netball’s Reg Sharp, who celebrates his birthday on 18 October.

Who are your role model(s) in sport?
Roger Federer stands out as an icon. I’ve never had the privilege of meeting him in person though.

What is your most memorable personal sporting moment?
The 2009 A Section SPAR Netball SA Tournament that was held in Port Elizabeth in 2009.

What is your most memorable other sporting moment that doesn’t involve you?
The Springboks winning the 1995 Rugby World Cup on home soil will always be special.

In terms of your travels, what has been your favourite city and why?
I really love London and mainly because of its cosmopolitan nature. I’d still like to visit Rio De Janeiro, mainly because of its beautiful natural sights.

Where in South Africa do you live?
Port Elizabeth

What is your favourite app on your phone?
I don’t really have a favourite app.

What is your favourite TV show?
Discovery Wild

What else do you do outside of sports coaching, ie, what’s your “day job”?
I’m a pensioner and a voluntary sports administrator

Is there anything that you’ve done in lockdown that you will continue doing permanently from now on?
Definitely planning time usage better

What did the Covid lockdown teach you?
It was been a God-given opportunity for self-reflection, reprioritising things, family time and an opportunity to catch up on work both personal and corporate long outstanding. I reset and found a different way of doing my work. As a full-time netball coach preparing for the winter season, all direct team and skills training were on hold but physical fitness and conditioning continued with WhatsApp home-based sessions given to the players daily for completion and return.

Finish the sentence. My sport is the best because ….
It is a true team sport in every sense of the word

In the next of our “Getting To Know Your SASCA Sports Coaches” series, we chat to netball’s Dumisane Chauke, the Proteas assistant coach, who celebrates her birthday on 17 September. Here she tells us a little more about herself.

Who are your role model(s) in the sport? Have you ever met him/her?
My role model is former Netball SA president Ntambi Ravele and yes I have met her.

What is your most memorable personal sporting moment?
When I made the SA Under-16 Netball team back in 2002 and played for South Africa for the first time in Mozambique and we won gold.

What is your most memorable other sporting moment that doesn’t involve you?
When Desiree Ellis won the CAF Coach of the Year award in 2019.

In terms of your travels, what has been your favourite city and why?
I enjoy travelling to African countries, and my favourite so far is Mozambique.

Where in South Africa do you live?
Johannesburg, Gauteng

What is your favourite app on your phone?
Facebook

What is your favourite TV show?
Chopped on food network.

What else do you do outside of sports coaching, ie, what’s your “day job”?
I am a sport organiser for Netball and Basketball at the Tshwane University of Technology

Is there anything that you’ve done in lockdown that you will continue doing permanently from now on?
I have enjoyed being home with my kids and cooking a lot of meals together, that is something I would like to keep even though malls and restaurants are open now. During lockdown I used my Twitter account for daily “Coaching From Home” posts for netballers to stay active during lockdown.

Finish the sentence. My sport is the best because…
It is fun, exciting and is a tool to empower girls and women.

OFF THE COURTS
In 2018, she launched the Dumisani Chauke Netball Foundation as an effort to give back to young girls who come after her. At the heart of the Foundation is the spirit of “paying it forward” by creating opportunities for Netball loving young girls to excel in what they are passionate about and be successful in their careers.

Since its launch, the Foundation has positively changed many lives. This year, the Foundation responded to President Cyril Ramaphosa’s call for patriotic individuals and businesses to lend a hand to households, especially from townships and informal settlements which are deeply affected by hunger and poverty amidst the spread of Covid-19 and the national lockdown. During the lockdown period the Dumisani Chauke Netball Foundation embarked in the programme to distribute food and hygiene parcels to various communities in South Africa.

My role model is Serena Williams. It amazes me how she challenges herself and narrative about women in sports who are a certain age especially after having a baby.

What is your most memorable personal sporting moment?
I have quite a few but I will choose one. It was the Soccer World Cup final where I was part of the closing ceremony. The best time of my life, dancing with Shakira and freshly ground to Waka Waka.

What is your most memorable other sporting moment that doesn’t involve you?
The 1999 Cricket World Cup where South Africa played Australia. We had three balls in hand and just need one run. The time when Allan Donald froze in the middle of the pitch was the most chattering moment ever. I realised then how passionate about sport I was.

In terms of your travels, what has been your favourite city and why?
My favourite city so far would be Stuttgart Germany. It has the Mercedes Museum, the most beautiful site yet. Seeing all those cars and reading about the history, I appreciated the brand even more. The best or nothing.

What city would you most like to visit, and why?
I would still love to visit Monaco, just to hear the sound of the F1 cars on the track and to experience the atmosphere.

Where in South Africa do you live?
Johannesburg. Everything is in close proximity and we have the best restaurants ever.

What is your favourite app on your phone?
Pintrest – it has helped me to be very creative mom when it comes to my son’s birthdays.

What is your favourite TV show?
Anything Korean series on Netflix

What else do you do outside of sports coaching?
I work at a bank

Is there anything that you’ve done in lockdown that you will continue doing permanently from now on?
Definitely working from home and cooking home cooked meals every day. I really enjoy making dinner for my family.

Finish the sentence. My sport is the best because …
It is the biggest women’s sport in South Africa and it is too dope.

In the next of our “Getting To Know Your SASCA Sports Coaches” series, we chat to netball’s Ninelle Jordaan who celebrates her birthday on 18 July. Here she tells us a little more about herself.

Who are your role model(s) in the sport? Have you ever met her?
Karla Pretorius. I played in a team with her in university. She is such a humble person, no matter the things she has achieved.

What is your most memorable personal sporting moment?
Being among the top shooters of the then Brutal Fruit players.

What is your most memorable other sporting moment that doesn’t involve you?
There is a video of Renske Stoltz in the England fast 5 where she just shoots long shot after long shot. Her team has got so much faith in her and she has so much confidence. It’s amazing!

In terms of your travels, what has been your favourite city and why?
For sport my favourite has to be Durban, I love the ocean as well as the freshness of the air.

Where in South Africa do you live?
Kimberley, Northern Cape (see why I love going to the ocean)

What is your favourite app on your phone?
Probably Whats app, it allows me to stay connected with family and friends.

What is your favourite TV show?
Any comedy show where I can just relax and not have to think too much. At the moment I’m rewatching Friends.

What else do you do outside of sports coaching?
Well, I am a teacher. So that and coaching takes up a lot of my time. Otherwise I like taking on creative projects like sewing, painting, photography and other crafts. Something to keep my hands busy.

Finish the sentence. If I wasn’t so actively involved in netball I’d be …
Traveling all over South Africa with my friends in my spare time.
