No laps! No lines! No lectures…

A few basics for coaching kids…you’re probably not going to like a few of these, and your old high school coach will probably HATE them, but you’re going to have to trust me.

No laps. No lines. No lectures. And never, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever…breathe…ever, ever, ever, ever…hang in there…ever, ever, ever, ever…we’re getting there…ever, ever, ever punish with exercise.

Let’s break it down.

No laps. Here’s what I tell the kids first day of summer baseball practice, “I’m not a track coach, so we’re not running laps.” Yeah I stole the line, but you can feel the relief from the kids when I say it (then we teach base running, and get our running done anyway). Having your kids run laps usually means you don’t know what else to do with them (unless you’re a track coach). They can get plenty of exercise doing sport-specific skilled drills, if you take the time to organize your practices right. Few things turn a kid off basketball practice than running around without a basketball…same for “name-your-sport”.

No lines. The more time a player stands in a line, doing nothing, the worse job you’re doing. Simple as that. Standing in line teaches you nothing, gives you no love for movement, gets no one better. Never run a drill with one line when you can split it into two. Never drill with two when you can do four. Never do four lines, when the whole team can participate. When you design a drill with everyone involved, you take care of teaching, reps, and conditioning at the same time. Do this; when you’re done with practice, take a look at your lower skilled players and ask yourself how many times they touched the ball, puck, bat, racket, etc. Divide that by your practice time, and you’ll get a nice little data analysis of how good your practice was. Better yet, imagine the kids parent watching your practice and focusing on their kid alone. Would they be okay with the number of reps their kid got.

No lectures. Kids don’t want to hear you talk…they want to play their game. Let them play. AND, their parents want them tired when you hand them back at the end of practice, not rested from napping through your lectures. Almost always better to show them, through action and repetitions, than to tell them.

Here’s a good piece of science that’ll help with this concept: when teaching a new skill, a person can only absorb 5 reps of quality-attention right brain activity before their mind-body connection splits. Then they need a break to reflect and reset before you can teach them again. You can do this 5 times a day…do the math and you see that you get 25 reps a day of quality teaching. After that it’s time to let them loose to apply that skill. So…pounding balls in batting practice, or at the driving range, or into the net, when you’re learning a new skill is a waste of time after the 25th rep. How’s that for an eye-opener?

And…finally…Never, ever, ever (ad-infinitum) punish with exercise. We want kids to embrace exercise, to fall in love with movement and sweat and physical effort. We don’t want them to look at hard work as punishment. I see coaches all the time (and so do you) who say things like “Okay, losers do 10 push-ups.” I absolutely freakin’ cringe when I hear that. Do we really want your players to equate exercise with being a loser? Makes me want to scream…

“NO, COACH…WINNERS DO PUSH-UPS! WINNERS RUN YOUR EXTRA LAPS! WINNERS GET IN BETTER SHAPE SO THEIR SPORT IS EASIER AND MORE FUN! THAT WHAT WINNERS DO!”

Footnote…here’s another one, since I’m on a roll. Kids don’t need to stretch. Sorry they just don’t. Did you ever stretch before you did ANYTHING when you were a kid? Neither did I. Did you know there is exactly zero scientific evidence that stretching prevents injury? Don’t waste their time…trust me, they don’t need to stretch.

It was a sad moment when it was confirmed that O R Tambo Netball Coach, Nocamagu Mvunyiswa had indeed passed away in the tragic bus accident of 6th December 2021. Sad for many reasons. She was a passionate netballer who had progressed from a player of note to a very promising coach.

Witness to her coaching progress is her appointment to the Assistant Coach position for the very successful E Cape Aloes teams of 2020 & 2021. Sad because a very promising career as a role model to young up and coming netballers has been cut short. Sad because her feisty aggressive straight talking and efficient hard work will be sorely missed by her District colleagues. She is summed up by the single word, Passionate in all that she did and the example she left should be an inspiration to many netballers in generations to come.

Her membership with SASCA came with the same passion. We in the Coaching fraternity will certainly miss her and thank God for the contribution she made in her all too short life. RIP.

A coach’s role is critical in the context of our society. What I want to share with you in this article is my philosophy on the role of sport and the significant contribution coaches make. This is particularly important for your sport and every sport.

My belief, is sport is a medium to teach lessons to our athletes (particularly the young ones). Lessons about life. These lessons learnt in sport can and should be transferred to other areas of our lives so we can all become more effective and meaningful contributors to society. Sport can expand on the quality of the lessons. So the role of the coach is to help their athletes learn these lessons about life. Each coach may teach a slightly different lesson. We do not all have to teach the same lessons, just as long as our athletes are learning.

For coaches to be successful in sport, I believe they have to build emotional bonds with their athletes. There is a significant amount of research about the importance of an effective Coach-Athlete Relationship. Effective relationships are underpinned with trust and respect. Trust and respect develop over time, particularly trust (we have a great article on how to build trust with your athletes through behavioral predictability).

Creating this relationship means coaches need to truly understand their athletes. What makes them tick? When an athlete feels as though you are trying to learn more about them, they feel valued. What happens when you feel valued? When I feel valued I want to contribute more. It is the same for all of us. It is a fact; people who feel valued give their best more often. They are engaged and contribute more discretionary effort.

How we make our athletes feel valued is by understanding them, their strengths, limitations, motivations and other needs. Not every athlete is the same and so every athlete needs to be coached in a way which is suitable for them. Our business helps coaches unlock each athlete’s unique coaching code. We also help coaches understand what style of coach they are.

Before any coach can understand their athletes they first need to understand themselves. We all have our unique personality which impacts the predominant way we coach. When coaches understand how they coach they are in a position to coach in different ways. Remember it is possible each of your athletes requires a different coaching style. Every coach has the ability to adopt a different style if they choose.

So in this short article, I want to encourage you to really appreciate the critical nature of your coaching role. Sport is not about sport. It is about life and the skills required to make meaningful contributions to society. Also, I hope you build wonderful relationships with your athletes, especially the young ones. They deserve wonderful coaches. I had a coach at school that inspired me to compete in my first Olympics. What are you inspiring your athletes to achieve in their lives? Finally, take time to truly understand your athletes and their unique needs and if you can, coach them in a way they require. If you need help with this, please contact Athlete Assessments for assistance. This is what we do.

What is the role of sport coaches and how can they influence athletes?

There are several reasons why athletes fail to reach their potentials, such as low confidence. This makes the role of sport coaches even more important.

Sport can be a vehicle for positive development. It prompts participants to learn, achieve and develop. Engagement in sport can foster personal growth. There are also studies that suggest sport can promote well-being and academic achievement. However, negative sporting experiences can also hinder development.

These tips on the role of sport coaches have been taken from and adapted from Coaching Excellence.

The role of sport coaches

The role of sport coaches isn’t just to coach. Coaches are well placed to help athletes reach their potentials. They also play a key part in getting children and teenagers to engage in sport and physical activity.

Sport coaches are in a great position to promote the active lifestyles, inclusion and engagement in physical activity. However, this promotion doesn’t happen overnight. It takes guidance and an understanding of the power of sport. Coaches should be equipped to deliver on these expectations and unlock athletes’ potential.

Most people acknowledge the central role of sport coaches in the coach-athlete-performance relationship. We’ve all seen coaching examples of great coach-athlete-performance relationships. The most recent being Gareth Southgate getting the most of our his England team at the 2018 FIFA World Cup. As well as this, Southgate was credited with being a great support for Danny Rose, after he revealed his battle with depression.

Primary Aim of Coaching

Sport has been associated with positive experiences and outcomes, such as improved confidence and academic achievement. However, it’s also been linked with negative experiences and outcomes, such as stress, burnout, dropout and low self-esteem.

The role of sport coaches is to encourage healthy development in players. Coaches are important role models for children and youths and along with parents, are significant adult influences. How coaches interact with players determines the outcomes of participation. Therefore, coaches play a vital role in the contribution of sport to physical and psychosocial development.

These positive outcomes can be broken down into the four C’s:

Competence

Confidence

Connection

Character and caring

We’ll look at each section in detail below.

Competence

Competence means to have a positive view of yourself in specific contexts. These can include sport, academic, work and social environments. To feel competent is a fundamental psychological need for humans in all cultures. Those who feel competent are more likely to be motivated to work hard and pursue and achieve excellence.

The feeling of accomplishment that happens when an athlete achieves a goal is powerful. It can motivate them to keeping pushing forward. Therefore, sporting experiences can foster a sense of competence in all participants, including those whose abilities are less developed that others. Obviously, the role of coaches is central to promoting a sense of competence. Contexts that hinder the perception of competence are associated with lower motivation, performance and well-being.

Confidence

To have confidence, you need to have a positive sense of self-worth and self-efficacy. Having this view of yourself can influence motivation, the capacity to learn and also subsequent performance. Confidence is developed during childhood, however it can be fragile, especially into the teenage years. Coaches are well placed to help youngsters show more initiative and be more independent. Coaches that focus on self-reference improvement promote internal motivation, a willingness to work hard and resilience. Furthermore, they create athletes who view themselves positively.

Coaches can help youth players develop competence in their sport and confidence in themselves.

Connection

Connection is associated with a sense of belonging. Everyone wants to feel like they belong. A key reason for children’s engagement in sport is to pursue friendships. Athletes at the elite level also have the same need to belong that children do. Sport provides opportunities to develop a strong sense of belonging to teams and squads. These positive bonds among team members provide a warm and friendly environment in which to develop physical and social skills. Additionally, positive connections with coaches through constructive and encouraging feedback promotes enjoyment and other positive outcomes, such as increased effort.

Character and Caring

The development of character and caring hasn’t always been linked with sport. However, sport can contribute to the development of character and a sense of compassion. Moral development and integrity also come under this fourth C. Respecting others and demonstrating appropriate behaviours on and off the pitch is central to the development of good moral characters. Also, sportspeople with good moral character are sensitive to issues such as access for all and tolerance of differences.

For more information on developing good moral character in children, read our blog post 7 great ideas for teaching sportsmanship to children.

Developing these four C’s in athletes should be important to all sport coaches. Therefore, coaches need to be mindful of how they behave and how they go about contributing to the development of their athletes. Consideration of these four C’s in coaching practice strengthens positive sporting experiences for all. A focus on development encourages athletes’ continued engagement in sport, which is necessary for them to improve their sporting abilities.

Summary

Creating positive learning environments can contribute towards athlete development. The ability to do this is key for sport coaches.

The four C’s outlined above are a helpful way to think about the development of athletes. Coaches should consider how their coaching contributes to the four C’s of each athlete.

Athletes that feel valued and are progressing in their development are more likely to remain in sport and benefit from sustained engagement. Therefore the work of sport coaches in all contexts should be recognised and valued.

Coaches at all levels need to develop their coaching philosophies. These philosophies should be considered in conjunction with ethically based decisions about how to interact and behave in sporting environments.

Coaches are solely responsible for their own learning and development. This includes reflecting on their work internally and with the guidance of others.

Finally, ongoing engagement in sport requires coaches to find the right balance between work and play. Also, having a good work-life balance can improve the quality of coaching and fosters longevity in the role.

The 9 purposes of being a Sports Coach

We are living in competitive times so you need to be on top of your game in whatever you do. In this post I attempt to share the purposes of being a sports coach and also the important role that any coach plays in society.

YOU GET TO FULFILL ATHLETES DREAMS– Almost all children are exposed to different kinds of sport when they are still very young, and through this they develop dreams of being like their sporting heroes/heroines. As a sports coach you play a significant part in the process of developing the necessary skills and a healthy mind-set to get the very best performance out of athletes. In so doing, you play a huge part in athletes being able to realise their dreams.

YOU GET TO FULFILL YOUR OWN DREAMS– If you love sport, why not develop a career in sport? Over the years of being a pro athlete, I have bared witness to so many other athletes and sport fanatics become ensnared in careers that they do not want to be in. They become “victims” of a struggling economy and end up pitching for work everyday where they do not feel motivated to give of their best. As the famous businessman Warren Buffet said, “If you love what you do, you will never have to work a day in your life.” Being a coach allows you to stay involved in sport in some way and dedicate your life to something you love and have a passion for.

YOU GET TO TEACH PHYSICAL SPORT SKILLS– As a coach you get to teach many athletes a wide range of physical skills. You teach them how to run, jump, dodge, skip, catch and throw successfully. Through consistent practise you also get to teach visual skills, co-ordination skills, balancing skills and spatial-awareness – skills all top athletes possess.

YOU GET TO TEACH EMOTIONAL SKILLS– Learning emotional control is a crucial skill that can be transferred into any area of your life, be it in relationships with family and friends, in marriage, or even in business and working environments. To be successful in these areas you need to learn how to be composed and be able to recognise and control your emotions. Emotional intelligence is all about recognising your own emotions and moods, as well as your ability to understand other people’s moods, their behaviours, and motives in order to respond effectively, and improve the quality of your relationships.

YOU GET TO TEACH MENTAL SKILLS– Any successful pro-athlete will tell you that the number one factor in achieving success at the top, is mental toughness. Being a sports coach allows you to develop characteristics of a winning mentality that you need in order to be successful in any area of life. You get to teach the principles of sacrifice, good habits, repetition, accountability, good self-esteem, confidence, communication and being a good role-model, and in the process develop more athletes like the Federer’s, Messi’s and the Ronaldo’s of the world. You get to develop true leaders who believe in themselves, have positive mind-sets, are hard-working, and who are able to deal with failure and disappointment, and have the grit to overcome any obstacles.

YOU GET TO DEVELOP STRONG LEADERS– Leadership is a scarce skill. In order for South Africa to become a powerhouse in a lot more sporting codes, we need strong, honest leaders who can create an inspiring hope for the future. Essentially, as a coach you have to develop strong leadership characteristics within your team in order for those individuals, and in turn that team, to be amongst the best in their sporting code. These leadership characteristics can also be transferred to any area of life.

YOU CAN SCALE A BEAUTIFUL LIFE FOR YOU AND YOUR FAMILY– As a pro athlete I got the opportunity to travel all around the world, competing in over 20 different countries. When you make it as a top level sports coach, you get to do the same. Creating champions and being a successful coach will allow you to live a seemingly unrestricted life and the life that you want. It’s going to allow you to live out your dreams and do things like travel the world with your loved ones. You also get to build true wealth in all areas of life, not just financially.

YOU GET TO SERVE HUMANITY– When you help people achieve their dreams, when you build an exceptional team of leaders, when you instill good values, when you build a blueprint for success, then you build a legacy of changing lives for the better. When you are successful at what you do it allows others to be successful as well and creates an atmosphere of fruitfulness where there are plenty of opportunities for everyone to be successful. By creating champions, you get to be a part of changing the community, city and country for the better. You get to make the world a better place.

YOU GET TO IMPLEMENT KNOWLEDGE– Sport coaches have the skills to optimise every aspect of an athlete’s training to ensure that they produce the best performance. At top level, the difference between winning and losing is in the inches. A coach has knowledge of anatomy, biomechanics and physiology and understands how to apply it to the training process. The coach knows how to apply training load to appropriately stress each athlete in order to get a desired response and adaptation, and extend the athlete’s fitness capacity. A coach also understands nutrition and hydration and how it affects sports performance.

There is a huge need for so many codes for honest, passionate and educated coaches in this country. I trust that this blog will open your eyes to see the role that sport plays in changing society for the better as our country needs more heroes. I hope this has inspired you enough to take action in getting your coaching career started.
